Artist's Statement
I respond to materials. I am inspired by combining textures with colors that I see in nature. Working with paints on my canvas just wasn’t enough, I felt a void. What I saw in my visual world was not being satisfied with just paint. As I began to place other materials on my canvas I saw my own language for expression growing and expanding.
My current collage pieces are investigating swarm patterns in nature. These pieces investigate the juxtaposition of the beauty in the natural pattern and the art of thought. This idea stems from the notion that as an individual we can stand out, but ultimately the power lies with in the group. Even though swarms may appear frightening when we are confronted by bees, locusts and other insects, there is a natural beauty in their patterns and movement. As I work through this series, I develop a personal vocabulary of materials, marks and movements within my thoughts.
