City in Memory
A “sense of place” is often used to characterize a setting that is special to someone. It is a complex notion of one’s experiences relating to a location. I crave the city. It is my “sense of space”. It is the place that has informed and nurtured my younger self and as I build a home away from it, the city continues to define my sensibilities and evolve my thought process.
This body of work, City in Memory, are collages that echo the beat and chaotic pulse of the city. They are repetitive, dense, black and white imagery that create space and memory. They are optimistic and personal. They are designed with a rhythm and cadence. The line drawings of structures that sit in the city scapes are self-portraits. They are symbols of my current identity reflecting in a memory. They are often incomplete thoughts, vulnerable and imperfect.
